Winter is on its way… Keep that cold air at bay.
As we enter the heating season, it’s important to make sure your furnace or heat pump is operating properly. Consider scheduling an appointment with a local heating and cooling business to have your furnace inspected to ensure the equipment is ready to go when it’s time to switch your thermostat to heating mode.
It’s also important to make sure that cold air isn’t leaking into your home unnecessarily. Check around windows and doors for air leaks. If you feel air coming through, or you believe your house may be a bit drafty, you may need to seal air leaks by installing new weather stripping or caulking around window, as well as adding more insulation in walls or attic spaces.
An easy way to determine if the weather stripping around your windows is worn out is the “dollar bill in the window sill” test. Open a window, insert a dollar bill between the window and the sill, then close the window. If you can easily pull the dollar bill out with the window closed, you may need to replace the seal around the window.
